Our Story

Back in 1993 my husband Greg and I bought a sheep and beef farm in Mangatahi Hawkes Bay. Soon after, drought hit hard and we looked to diversify. Inspired by Hawkes Bay Tourism promoting Hawkes Bay as the Tuscany of the south, we planted olive trees and lavender. What started as a small experiment soon expanded to over 26,000 lavender plants.

Greg, always resourceful, worked with local engineers to develop a lavender harvester and a still for extracting our high quality lavender oil.

Encouraged by friends and visitors who loved the tranquility and beauty of the lavender fields, we decided to open Casa Lavanda to the public during the summer season. We developed a range of body care products, the historic Red Barn was transformed into a gallery and café, and we were soon a “happening place to be”. It was a real privilege to meet visitors from all over New Zealand and many parts of the world.

The Casa Lavanda product range proved popular - soon retailers, restaurants and accommodation hosts were eager to stock our products. Black Barn chose Casa Lavanda for the bathroom amenities in their luxury lodges. Twenty five years on, we are still their preferred supplier.

After a decade of tourism, we decided to close the lavender farm to the public and focus instead on our product range which was selling well online, nationwide.

As we continue on, Greg’s legacy lives on in every bottle of lavender oil and every product we create. With a heart of gratitude, I am committed to preserving the spirit of Casa Lavanda, serving our loyal customers and nurturing the community that has become part of our story.

With a grateful heart,

Mary
